Speaking of Copyright: This Celebes crested macaque picked up photographer David Slater’s camera and took a selfie that became part of a big copyright debate. Slater claimed copyright ownership, but because only legal “persons” can create copyrightable work, and animals do not qualify for personhood, the U.S. Copyright Office refused to grant Slater the copyright. Although the idea of copyright ownership for animals may be interesting, the larger question of personhood for animals is far more important, raising questions about fundamental rights for nonhuman animals.
